MATC Routs Kishwaukee in Regular Season Finale
Posted 5-8-06 - MATC collected an important win Sunday in game two of a home doubleheader against Kishwaukee College. With the win, the WolfPack conclude the regular season with a 31-21-2 record, and now turn their attention to the playoffs.
In the second game, Ben Long drove in five runs and Blaine Rutledge went 3-for-3 as the WolfPack pounded out 12 hits in the seven-inning victory. Long blasted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the third inning, and MATC added four runs in the fourth and four more in the seventh inning. Stephen Gilgenbach (6-3) pitched seven strong innings, striking out seven while allowing just one run and two hits to get the win.
Rutledge had two singles and a double to boost his batting average to a team-best .408 heading into the playoffs. He also finishes the regular season leading the team in other key offensive categories including hits (62), home runs (6), RBIs (39 - tied with Long), slugging percentage (.625) and on-base percentage (.548).
MATC came back from being down 9-3 going into the bottom of the ninth in game one against the Kougars. The WolfPack strung together five runs and had runners on first and third with two outs, but couldn't quite complete the rally in a 8-9 loss. Brett Scarpetta (1-3) was charged for six runs but allowed only one over six and two-thirds innings. He struck out three but walked five in the game. Brad Frank led the way offensively with four hits and three RBIs. |

MATC Signs Two Standout Recruits
Posted 5-8-06 - Jacob Nelson, a 6-foot-4 forward from New Auburn, WI, and Turrell Huff, a 6-foot-1 guard from St. Francis, WI, have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Madison Area Technical College men’s basketball team during the 2006-07 season.
Nelson was a Division IV WBCA All-star, and a first team all-conference and all-county selection last season. The versatile scorer averaged 25.5 ppg and finished as the fifth leading scorer in Wisconsin according to wishoops.net - just ahead of Jason Jensen (St. Francis H.S.), who also signed to play basketball at MATC last week. Nelson also averaged three assists and just over 12 rebounds per game to lead the Trojans to a 9-5 record in the competitive East Division of the Lakeland Conference.
“Jacob is the type of quality student-athlete that we want in our program,” Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl commented. “He has tremendous potential and the work ethic to be an outstanding player. He is also a quality young man and we are very pleased that he is joining our WolfPack basketball family.”
Turell Huff, a 6-foot-1 guard from St. Francis, WI, is the second player out of St. Francis H.S. to sign on with MATC in the last week, joining forward Jason Jensen.
Huff was a first team all-conference and all-area honorable mention selection in 2003. The multi-talented guard averaged 14.5 points and four assists per game for the Mariners during the 2002-03 season.
“Turell will be a great addition to our program,” said Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl. “He can play both guard positions and is a great passer. His athleticism, skill and ability will be huge assets to our program.” |

MATC Signs St. Francis Basketball Star
Posted 4-28-06 - Jason Jensen, a 6-foot-5 forward from Saint Francis High School in St. Francis, WI, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Madison Area Technical College men’s basketball team during the 2006-07 season.
Jensen was the Parkland Conference player-of-the-year, an all-area and all-state honorable mention selection last season. The prolific scorer averaged 25.4 ppg and finished as the sixth leading scorer in Wisconsin, just ahead of Jerry Smith from Wauwatosa East, according to wishoops.net
Jensen led the Mariners to their first winning season in nearly a decade in a tough Parkland Conference this year. Jensen is scheduled to play in the Division II WBCA All-Star game this summer in Madison.
"He is probably the best player to come through St. Francis," said St. Francis Head Coach John Kloppenburg. "The sky is the limit for him."
“Jason is a great fit for MATC,” Head Coach Scot Vesterdahl said. “He is one of the top recruits in MATC’s history and our coaching staff is extremely excited to get him to Madison and make him a part of our basketball family. We have very high expectations for him both in the classroom and on the court. His athleticism, skill, and ability to shoot the ball will be huge assets for our program.” |
